Tesla’s FSD v14.2.1 May Allow Texting While Driving in Certain Traffic Conditions

Tesla’s newest Full Self-Driving (FSD) update, v14.2.1, has introduced one of the most controversial behaviors yet:
under certain traffic conditions, the system may allow the driver to use their phone — including texting — while the car handles the driving.

This revelation has major implications for Tesla drivers across Tesla Canada, especially those who own or are shopping for a used Tesla, used teslas, used Tesla Model 3, used Tesla Model 4, or any used EV / used electric vehicle in EV Ontario, including EV Toronto, EV Mississauga, and EV Oakville.

Elon Musk: “Depending on the context of surrounding traffic, yes.”

The discussion began when Elon Musk publicly responded to questions about whether FSD can now allow drivers to text while the car is moving. Musk replied:

“Depending on context of surrounding traffic, yes.”

This means the system may tolerate limited phone use in:

  • Slow-moving traffic

  • Simple, low-risk environments

  • Situations where FSD has high confidence

Multiple testers in the U.S. and Canada have demonstrated that FSD v14.2.1 continues to steer, accelerate, brake, and navigate while the human driver uses their phone — even while typing.

But Legally and Practically: The Driver Is Still Responsible

Even if FSD allows temporary hands-off or eyes-off moments, Tesla is clear that:

  • FSD remains a Level 2 driver-assistance system

  • The driver must pay attention at all times

  • Drivers remain legally liable for any incident

This applies across all provinces in Canada — especially Ontario, where strict distracted-driving laws prohibit holding or interacting with a phone while driving.

So even if FSD does not disengage when texting, police can still ticket drivers, and insurance companies will still hold the driver liable in case of a collision.

Testers Confirm: FSD v14.2.1 Does Not Stop the Car When the Driver Texts

Early testers observed:

  • The cluster may briefly warn the driver to “pay attention,” but…

  • The system does not disengage

  • The car continues to perform lane changes, turns, braking, and traffic navigation

  • Drivers were able to type messages without FSD pausing or stopping

This is a significant shift from older versions, which were far stricter about requiring hand presence and eye tracking.

Why Tesla May Be Doing This

This update aligns with Tesla’s stated goal of making FSD “more natural and less intrusive.”

Musk has previously called texting while driving “the killer app of autonomy,” meaning:

  • Most people want to stay connected

  • Autonomy should make this safer

  • FSD will eventually allow hands-off and attention-free driving

But this is the future Musk envisions — not the current regulatory reality.

Safety Risks: Why Texting While Driving Is Still Not Advisable

Even for owners of a Used Tesla, used Tesla Model 3, used Tesla Model Y, or any Used EV, this feature should not be interpreted as permission to drive distracted.

Here’s 4 reasons:

1. It’s illegal in most regions, including Ontario

High fines + demerit points + insurance penalties.

2. FSD is not autonomous

It still makes mistakes (turning too wide, misreading signs, misjudging gaps, etc.).

3. The driver is always liable

If an accident happens while texting, the driver is fully responsible — even if FSD was steering.

4. Certain scenarios remain extremely challenging

  • Pedestrians stepping into the road

  • Snow, slush, fog

  • Complex downtown intersections (especially in EV Toronto)

  • Aggressive merging on 401 or QEW

FSD cannot guarantee safety in all conditions.

What This Means for Used Tesla & Used EV Buyers in Ontario

For consumers considering a used Tesla, used Tesla Model 3, used Tesla Model Y, or used electric vehicle in EV Ontario, this update highlights several key insights:

Tesla’s FSD continues to advance rapidly

Used Tesla buyers can expect ongoing performance improvements.

Hardware and software updates keep Tesla vehicles competitive longer

This strengthens resale value for the used Tesla market in cities like Toronto, Mississauga, and Oakville.

But FSD is not a replacement for driver attention

Carnex customers should treat FSD as a helpful assistant, not a self-driving system.

Used Tesla cars with FSD may become increasingly desirable

As FSD capabilities improve, used Teslas with FSD subscriptions or lifetime packages may command higher demand.

Final Thoughts — Impressive Technology, but Driver Awareness Is Still Essential

FSD v14.2.1 is a major step forward in Tesla’s path toward autonomous driving. The fact that it can — in certain contexts — allow texting while driving demonstrates just how capable the system is becoming.

But for drivers in Tesla Canada, especially those in EV Toronto, EV Mississauga, EV Oakville, and across EV Ontario, the takeaway is clear:

Just because FSD can do something, it doesn’t mean you legally or safely should.

For now, Tesla owners — including those driving a used Tesla or used EV from Carnex — should continue using FSD responsibly while staying fully attentive.
