What documents do you need for buying a car in Ontario?
A driver’s license
You may be able to exchange your old license for a new Canadian license. It depends on where you moved from and how much driving experience you have. If you cannot exchange your license, you may be able to use your past driving experience as a credit. In this case, you will need three pieces of ID include:
1) your Canadian Citizenship card
2) your old (foreign) driver’s license
3) an official abstract document issued within the last six months

Vehicle registration
Vehicle registration is very simple for a new vehicle. In general, if you buying a new vehicle from a dealership, they will often file the vehicle registration for you.
While you buying a used vehicle, especially when you buy it from the owner, you must register it with the government to finalize your legal ownership of the vehicle that you have purchased.
Buying a new or used vehicle?
Buying a new vehicle can be good for new immigrants. Since you can only buy a new car from a dealership, it means you are buying from an established business that you can trust. You can also access all the latest technology and features with a new car. A new car also comes with manufacture warranties that will last for years.
Although a new vehicle can be leased or financed, it’s still more expensive and it could be difficult to finance or lease for new immigrants. Since new immigrants usually have not been established enough credit scores in Canada yet as they just arrive. That is a credit rating that enders need to access to know how trustworthy you are with borrowing money.
Alternatively, buying a used car can be a better way to get on the road for new immigrants and it’s more affordable. You can buy a used vehicle from a professional dealership or private sellers. Private sellers can sell their vehicles for whatever the price they want, it means you may get a bargain if you buy direct from car owners as there is no middle man get involved. However, it also means you are exposed to more potential risks and damages if you don’t know how to check a used car. To avoid making a bad deal, you should take it to a professional mechanic for a full inspection if you are buying a used car from private sellers.
