What Is a Tesla V4 Supercharger and How Is It Compare To V3

Tesla has developed a variety of chargers for its customers over the years, ranging from very powerful public charging stations to at-home cords. Tesla has started to install its first V4 Supercharger in March 2023. But what does Tesla’s V4 supercharger have to offer, and is it superior to the V3 charger?

The V4 Supercharger promises to be even more advanced and efficient than its predecessor, the V3. It is expected to offer faster charging speeds, allowing Tesla owners to spend even less time waiting for their vehicles to recharge.  The introduction of the Tesla V4 Supercharger marks a critical milestone in the automobile industry’s transformation to renewable energy. This technology is exciting and promising, so let’s get into the specifics and compare it to its predecessor, the V3 Supercharger, and we will go over the key differences between the V4 and V3 Superchargers in this blog.

What are Tesla V4 Supercharger?

Tesla drivers can choose from four different chargers: the V1, V2, V3, and V4. Tesla V3 charging is used at the great majority of public Tesla charging stations, which comprise Tesla’s supercharger network. Because of their lower power output, V1 and V2 chargers are suited for at-home or destination charging, whereas V3 and V4 chargers are designated Superchargers and are only available at public stations.

This new Tesla Supercharger can provide charging speeds of up to 250 kW. According to a photo posted X of a V4 charger’s characteristics in the Netherlands, the V4 Supercharger may be capable of reaching 650kW.

Tesla V4 Superchargers now have the same maximum power as V3 chargers (250kW), although this is expected to alter in the future. Tesla’s V4 chargers are expected to have a maximum output of 350kW, significantly shortening charging times. According to an X post exhibiting the characteristics of a Dutch V4 charger, the amperage of a V4 is 615A, as opposed to the V3’s amperage of 425A. As a result, the V4 superchargers should be able to generate a higher electric current throughout the charging process.

Faster charging times are one of the most common requests in the EV market, and the V4 Supercharger may assist in addressing this issue.

Differences with the Tesla V3 Supercharger

Tesla V4 Supercharger stations have a longer charging cable (three meters in total) and are taller than their predecessors V3. The black and white exterior design includes a contactless payment terminal for quick transactions using a contactless card, smartphone, or smartwatch.

This longer charging cable has been introduced for a key purpose: to offer charging to other EVs and the Tesla Cybertruck. Tesla’s Supercharger stations were initially only available to Tesla models but have since also been opened up to other EV brands in specific countries, so long as they offer a Combined Charging System (CCS). CCS is a standard for fast EV charging but isn’t universal across the EV industry. However, in Europe, this technology has further opened the access of Tesla chargers to other EVs of other car manufacturers to use.

Furthermore, because EVs for different brands are not all the same, their charging terminals are in different places. This makes connecting non-Tesla cars to a Tesla Supercharger difficult for some EV drivers. With a longer cable, the Tesla V4 Supercharger can accommodate numerous types of EVs outside of the Tesla range, allowing the Tesla Supercharging network to serve even more EV drivers. If you own a non-Tesla EV but want to take advantage of Tesla’s Supercharging network, the deployment of Tesla V4 charging may be extremely beneficial.

Tesla V4 Supercharger Availability and Network

Regardless of where you live, the number of Tesla V4 Superchargers is restricted. There is now a V4 charging station in Oregon, and another is being built in Alabama. With around 2,000 Tesla Supercharging stations (each with multiple charging docks) in the US, V3 Supercharging locations are plentiful, but V4 Supercharging stations will take some time to proliferate. The same is true for the United Kingdom.

Many countries are still waiting for their first V4 Supercharger station. In Europe, Austria, France, Germany, and the Netherlands have a small number of V4 charging stations, with the United Kingdom getting its first in August 2023. The Canadian market has no V4 superchargers planned as Tesla is still working on improving the network size and coverage around the country.

Key Features of Tesla V4 Supercharger

Although the V4 Superchargers have a simpler look, the V4 Supercharger’s increased charging speed is one of its most notable features. Tesla has streamlined the charging process, reducing the amount of time spent at charging stations while maintaining safety and battery health.

The V4 Supercharger aims to significantly simplify the charging procedure for Tesla owners, making it more user-friendly and convenient. Unlike certain technological advances that render previous models obsolete, the V4 Supercharger is backward compatible with existing Tesla vehicles. This ensures that Tesla customers may reap the benefits of quicker charging without having to replace their vehicles.

Tesla V4 Supercharger wires are also substantially longer than in prior models. Tesla’s V3 Superchargers had relatively short cables that were around 6.5 feet (2m) long, but for V4, the length of the cables has been increased to about 10 feet (3m) to make it easier to charge various types of automobiles.

Battery Effects

The new Tesla V4 superchargers are likely to provide efficient and safe charging for Tesla vehicles, taking into consideration factors that affect battery life. Tesla often implements advanced battery management systems to mitigate issues related to charging and discharging. It’s also possible that newer chargers could incorporate technologies to further optimize charging efficiency and reduce potential negative impacts on battery health.

Thermoregulation and better better-optimized means that your car battery may succumb less to the effects of fast charging. Synology continues to advance, we can expect Tesla to introduce even more innovative solutions to ensure safe and efficient charging. This could include features such as smart charging schedules, where the vehicle automatically adjusts its charging rate based on factors like time of day and energy grid demand.

Additionally, Tesla might explore partnerships with renewable energy providers to offer greener charging options, minimizing the environmental impact of charging while extending battery life. With these advancements, Tesla owners can look forward to a future of worry-free and long-lasting battery performance.

In conclusion, Tesla’s V4 Supercharger is a significant advancement in the evolution of electric vehicle charging technology. Tesla wants to meet the popular desire for faster charging times in the EV industry with its outstanding charging speeds of up to 250 kW and the potential to reach 650 kW in the future. The longer charging connection and greater amperage of the V4 Supercharger cater not just to Tesla vehicles, but also to other electric vehicles equipped with a Combined Charging System (CCS).

The addition of a broader range of EVs to the Tesla Supercharging network represents a more inclusive approach to sustainable transportation. The contactless payment terminal and improved design features contribute to a quick and easy charging experience. While Tesla V4 Supercharger deployment is still in its early stages, the promise of greater charging efficiency and possible advances in battery management systems augur well for the longevity and health of electric vehicle batteries.

Tesla V4 Supercharger represents a significant milestone in making electric vehicles more accessible, convenient, and environmentally beneficial as Tesla continues to advance in the field of electric vehicle technology. While availability is currently restricted, the gradual spread of V4 Supercharger stations around the world signals a bright future for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Tesla owners should expect further developments that improve the overall charging experience and contribute to a more sustainable future of transportation as the electric vehicle landscape changes.
