The long-anticipated Tesla Model Y Standard has officially arrived in Canada, offering a lower entry price but raising questions about what’s been sacrificed to make it more affordable.
Starting at CA$55,986, this entry-level version of Tesla’s best-selling SUV promises 321 miles (517 km) of range and maintains the brand’s signature minimalist design.
However, cost-cutting runs deeper than expected, and several features that many considered standard are now gone — sparking debate among both long-time Tesla fans and potential used Tesla buyers.
No Radio, No Autosteer, No Problem
One of the biggest surprises is the complete removal of FM and AM radio support.
While most drivers now use streaming apps or Bluetooth, traditional radio remains useful in areas with weak cell coverage.
Tesla’s infotainment system still supports digital streaming, but anyone hoping to tune in to live sports or local news over the air is out of luck.
Another major downgrade: Autosteer, Tesla’s basic lane-centering function (part of the standard Autopilot package), is gone.
Buyers can still pay CA$11,200 for Full Self-Driving (Supervised), but for now there appears to be no option to upgrade to basic Autopilot — neither before nor after purchase.

For many shoppers comparing used Tesla Model Y options, this raises an interesting question:
A recent used Tesla with full Autopilot and premium interior might now look more attractive than this stripped-down new version.
Simplified Interior and Tech Downgrades
Inside, the Model Y Standard trades luxury for simplicity.
The vegan leather upholstery in higher trims has been replaced with basic black fabric, and the ambient lighting strip is gone.
Rear seats are now manual-folding, and the steering column is manually adjustable as well.

Rear passengers lose their dedicated entertainment screen and heated seats.
The seven-speaker audio setup feels bare compared to the 15-speaker premium sound system found in higher trims.
Even the side mirrors have been downgraded to manual folding, without auto-dimming.
For many buyers looking at both new and used Tesla Model Y listings on Carnex.ca, these changes make used Teslas in Canada an even more compelling option.
The Curious Case of the Hidden Glass Roof
Perhaps the strangest design change lies overhead: Tesla kept the panoramic glass roof — but covered it with a fabric headliner.
According to Tesla, this reduces glare and cabin noise, and it’s cheaper than engineering a metal roof.

But don’t get your hopes up — even if you remove the liner, the glass underneath is opaque, so you won’t actually see the sky.
A Smaller, Simpler Frunk
Tesla’s cost-cutting also extends to the front trunk (frunk).
Compared with higher trims, the Model Y Standard’s frunk is smaller, less finished, and now features bare plastic, no lighting, and no insulation.
Even the handy drainage plug from previous versions is gone.
Some owners worry that the simplified design may no longer be fully waterproof — a potential issue in Canada’s wet climate.
Photos suggest missing seals and insulation layers, meaning moisture could enter during rain or car washes, limiting its usefulness for groceries or electronics.

Is It Worth the Savings?
Despite all the reductions, Tesla is betting that buyers will value affordability over convenience.
With roughly CA$7,000 in savings compared to the previous Model Y RWD, this new Standard trim opens the door for more Canadians to join the Tesla family.
However, for many practical buyers — especially those considering used Tesla vehicles in Canada — the trade-offs may not justify the savings.
Carnex’s selection of certified used Tesla Model Y and Model 3 vehicles may offer a smarter balance between cost, features, and value.
