Canadian Home EV Chargers Incentives & Rebates 2023

by Mar 24, 2023Electric cars0 comments

Are you in the market for your first electric vehicle? Perhaps you already own an EV and are looking to purchase a home EV charger. As electric vehicles gain popularity in Canada, more charging stations are being erected around the nation. More governments, towns, utilities, and corporations are giving subsidies to new EV drivers in their territories each year, these incentives are offered to stimulate the adoption of electric cars and the installation of charging stations. With 80% of EV charging sessions taking place at home, choosing to equip your house with an EV charging station is an important step in optimizing the savings and benefits that EVs provide.

This article provides a complete overview of the most recent charging station incentives in Canada, allowing you to make right decisions and capitalize on available possibilities.

EV Chargers Incentives

Canadian Federal EV Chargers Incentives

The Canadian federal government provides many incentives for the purchase and installation of home and office electric car charging stations (EVs). These incentives are part of the government’s aim to lower greenhouse gas emissions and encourage the use of sustainable energy.

The Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program is the name of the rebate scheme (ZEVIP). Public areas, on-street charging, workplaces, fleets, multi-family, and mass transit all have programs available.

The ZEVIP covers up to 50% of the eligible expenses of purchasing and installing level 2 charging stations in public spaces like as parking lots, offices, and multi-unit residential structures. The maximum financing per station is $5,000, with a total funding limit of $100,000 for each project. The project must fulfill specific requirements, such as the number of parking places, closeness to public transportation, and accessibility for persons with disabilities, in order to be considered. The amount of the refund varies according to the kind of charging station and the location of installation.

The following are the current ZEVIP rebate amounts:

  • Level 2 home charging stations: up to $350 per station
  • Workplace Level 2 charging stations: up to $5,000 per station
  • Public use direct current fast chargers (DCFC): up to 50% of total installation costs, up to $50,000 per station

Because the ZEVIP refund program is operated by provincial and territory governments, the reimbursement amount may differ depending on where you reside in Canada. Also, other rebate programs may be offered at the provincial or municipal levels, so check with your local government to see what other incentives are available.

Canadian Provincial EV Chargers Incentives

In addition to Canadian federal government incentives, each province in Canada has its own programs and policies to support the installation of charging stations.

Here are some provincial incentives for home EV charger installation in Canada:

British Columbia EV Chargers Incentives

The B.C. government has created the CleanBC plan and is collaborating with BC Hydro and FortisBC to give provincial incentives for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle (EV) home chargers.

British Columbia offers several incentives for the installation of level 2 and DC fast charging stations. These incentives include:

For single-family residences with private garages or dedicated parking, including duplexes and townhouses, a $350 rebate for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 EV charging station for personal use.

Businesses and corporations can submit separate applications for up to four distinct sites for workplaces. A subsidy of up to $2,000 per charger, up to a maximum of $14,000, is available for the purchase and installation of qualified Level 2 networked EV chargers for employee usage.

BC Hydro offers a rebate of up to $700 for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 EV charging station for residential customers.

Alberta EV Chargers Incentives

The Alberta government does not currently offer any incentives specifically for home EV charger installation for personal use.

Although this is not a program for subsidizing household EV chargers, there is a program administered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) that can assist your municipality in hastening its transition to eMobility. Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program assists municipalities in installing new chargers in public spaces, on-street locations, municipal properties, and municipal vehicle fleets. The complete cost of purchasing and installing a new charging station can be rebated up to $10,000 for each level 2 charger.

Ontario EV Chargers Incentives

In Ontario, there are no incentives for household charging stations. There is, however, the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), a new financial tool given by the City of Toronto to assist individuals in improving the energy efficiency of their houses while saving money.

Toronto residents can apply for a low-interest loan of up to $125,000 under the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) to pay the cost of home energy upgrades. The City of Toronto funds the required modifications, and homeowners compensate the City through payments deducted from their property tax bills. Home EV charging stations are among the enhancements (level 2 EV charger).

Additionally, the non-profit Plug’n Drive in Ontario is giving a $1,000 incentive for used electric vehicle purchases in partnership with the Clean Air Partnership. The Scrappage Incentive Scheme also offers $1,000 incentive when you recycle your old petrol car and replace it with a used electric vehicle. This is in addition to the existing Used EV Incentive scheme. It amounts to up to $2,000 in incentives for purchasing a used fully electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in Ontario.

Quebec EV Chargers Incentives

Individuals, not-for-profit organizations, corporations, and municipalities can benefit from the Government of Québec’s EV rebates in a variety of ways.

The financial support provided for the acquisition and installation of home EV chargers in multi-unit residential structures shall be the smaller of the two sums shown below:

50% of qualifying expenditures

OR $5,000 per wireless charging station OR $5,000 per connection for charging stations having one or more connectors that allow for the simultaneous charging of an equivalent number of electric cars.

Saskatchewan EV Chargers Incentives

In Saskatchewan, there is currently no subsidy for the purchase and installation of a home charging station. But, as part of the new iZEV programme, the Government of Canada is giving up to $5,000 in incentives for the purchase, rental, or lease of qualifying zero-emission cars (ZEV). The reduction is applied straight to the sticker price at the time of purchase or rental at the dealership.

Manitoba EV Chargers Incentives

Manitoba Hydro offers a home energy efficiency loan, which is a convenient and affordable financing option if you want to make energy-efficient improvements to your home. Your monthly contribution will be applied to your energy bill. No down payment is required.

The maximum loan amount is $3,000 per EV charger, including installation.

New Brunswick EV Chargers Incentives

Businesses, organizations, and communities in New Brunswick can get rebates for commercial charging stations. The initiative is funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).

The program will pay up to 50% of total qualifying expenses on chargers that are eligible, subject to the maximum amounts specified in the table below:

Level 2 (208 / 240 V connectors 3.3 kW to 19.2 kW):up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $5,000 per connector

Fast charger 20 kW to 49 kW: Up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $15,000 per fast charger

Fast charger 50 kW and above: Up to 50% of total Eligible Expenditures, to a maximum of $50,000 per fast charger

Nova Scotia EV Chargers Incentives

The Nova Scotia government does not currently offer any incentives specifically for home EV charger installation. However, the Government of Canada can help make the upfront cost of purchasing an EV more affordable through its Zero-emission Vehicle (ZEV) program.

Prince Edward Island EV Chargers Incentives

Prince Edward Island currently does not provide a subsidy for the purchase and installation of a domestic charging station. Nevertheless, on Prince Edward Island, registering an electric car is free, saving you $100 per year, and the province is offering a 50% decrease in vehicle registration expenses.

Newfoundland and Labrador EV Chargers Incentives

Although there are no provincial rebates for the purchase and installation of an EV home charging station in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Canada can help make the upfront cost of purchasing an EV more affordable through its Zero-emission Vehicle (ZEV) program.

Yukon EV Chargers Incentives

A reimbursement of up to $750 is available for the purchase and installation of one Level 2 EV charging station at a residential dwelling, including single-family detached homes, duplexes, triplexes, and mobile homes are all eligible.

A reimbursement of up to $7500 per installed Level 2 charger for 75% of the purchase and installation expenses. Multi-family dwellings, commercial structures, or institutional structures. Municipal and First Nations government-owned structures are included.

Installing a home EV charger for your electric vehicle can be a smart investment, as it not only provides convenience and accessibility, but also contributes to a cleaner and greener future. By taking advantage of available incentives, you can save money and support the growth of electric vehicle infrastructure in Canada.

We hope this guide has been helpful, and we encourage you to explore the options that best suit your needs and goals. It’s important to note that these incentives may change over time and there may be other incentives available at the municipal or utility level. It’s always a good idea to check with your local government or utility provider to see what incentives are available in your area.
