The Top 6 Best Selling Electric Vehicles in Canada

Although electric vehicles still have a long way to go before dominating Canada’s vehicle market, sales numbers from 2021 demonstrate that Canadian drivers are slowly making their moves to electric vehicles.

According to Statistics Canada, EV sales increased in 2021 compared to the previous year, despite the automobile industry’s seeing double-digit declines in sales. Electric vehicle sales should continue to rise in 2022 and 2023 as automakers expand into more segments, like the pickup truck category.

The Canadian automotive market plays an important role although it is on a smaller scale.  Last year, the Model 3 and Model Y was the most popular electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. In the past years, Tesla has demonstrated that there is a big market for upscale, high-performance battery-electric vehicles in Canada. According to Motor Illustrated, Tesla Model 3 sales increased 14.3 per cent year over year to approximately 12,800 units. While the sales by mainstream automakers show that Canadians are also interested in more economical electric vehicles like small crossovers. Economical electric vehicle options like Kia Forte, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, and Honda Civic were able to outsell the premium electric sedan.

If you’re curious what the electric trend is about, here’s a look at last year’s five best-selling electric vehicles in Canada.

Tesla Model 3

12,802 Sales in 2021(+14.3%)

It should not be a surprise we see the Tesla Model 3 is on the top of the best-selling electric vehicles list. The Tesla Model 3 is the most affordable Tesla model. It’s a high-performance electric car with a long-distance driving range and an affordable price tag, making it an appealing alternative for Canadian drivers.

The Model 3 comes in two trims: Standard Range, which has a range of around 150 kilometres, and Long Range, which has a range of 576 kilometres. Additionally, the Model 3 has been acknowledged as one of the top EVs with the best resale value with its low depreciation rate.

Hyundai Kona Electric

6,903 Sales in 2021

The KONA Electric is quite enjoyable to drive and has excellent range flexibility. With a full charge, you may go up to 415 kilometres. The Kona has a 201-hp electric motor instead of a four-cylinder engine and has a 64-kWh battery that can go up to 415 kilometres on a single charge. That’s crucial because, in today’s electric car industry, the range of an EV is the most important factor. The SEL trim is at the second position of our best-selling electric vehicle list as it’s the most economical electric Kona, which beginning at $34,000, and with the longest driving range in its class.

Best Selling Electric Vehicle

Tesla Model Y

6,398 Sales in 2021(+132.7%)

With an average of 100,000 units sold a year, Tesla Model Y accounted for about one-third of Tesla’s Canadian sales last year.

The Tesla Model Y offers up to 525 kilometres of emissions-free driving range, and it can be recharged at home or any roadside station. The Model Y offers the same excellent balance of driving performance and interior comfort. In comparison to Model 3, the Y has additional space and load capacity. Its size, on the other hand, is underutilised, and the falcon-wing doors are more bother than they’re worth. It has a payload capacity of 68 cubic feet. The Tesla Model Y is a five-seater with three trim options. All-wheel drive is included as standard.

Chevrolet Bolt EUV

4,668 Sales in 2021(+16.0%)

Chevrolet is giving its popular Bolt hatchback an SUV makeover. The Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a 5-seater SUV that is available in two trim levels. In terms of shared interior, comfort, and feature content updates, it’s even better. The Bolt EUV has features that the original Bolt lacked, including a larger wheelbase for more back-seat capacity and the option of Super Cruise. This family-friendly EUV has a driving range of 398 km on a single charge.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

4,352 Sales in 2021

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is an electric SUV that takes inspiration from the company’s performance and sports vehicle heritage. By designing an electric crossover with stylistic cues and a performance-oriented driving attitude inspired by the Mustang coupe and convertible that are still powered by gasoline, “Mustang” becomes a Ford sub-brand.

Under the robust style and a maximum driving range of 482 kilometres. The Mustang Mach-battery E’s pack may be recharged at home or on the road at one of the many charging stations for electric vehicles.

Nissan Leaf

1,224 Sales in 2021(-20.2%)

The Leaf is at the bottom of this best-selling electric vehicles list but the sales from 2021 have decreased by 20.2 per cent.

The Nissan Leaf is an excellent choice for people who do not require long-distance range. The Leaf Plus variant, based on the second-generation Leaf, has a range of 243 kilometres. The Leaf includes a number of high-tech driver-assistance technologies, including a semi-autonomous driving mode, and the cabin is roomy and comfy. The Nissan Leaf is arguably one of the best selling electric vehicle with the best value, thanks to its combination of range, tech features, and durability.
