Tesla Canada has officially launched Grok, the in-vehicle conversational AI developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, marking a new milestone in the evolution of Tesla’s smart car ecosystem.
Canadian Tesla owners have been waiting for months since the U.S. rollout in July, and the feature has finally arrived with the 2025.38 software update — a significant step toward the future of AI-powered driving in Canada.
Grok Finally Reaches Tesla Owners in Canada
The update began rolling out to Tesla vehicles across Canada late on October 8.
Interestingly, even Grok itself “doesn’t know” it has launched in Canada — when asked, the assistant humorously replies that it’s still delayed “due to some privacy regulations, like the upcoming AI bill.”
The delay was tied to Canada’s Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA), part of the proposed Bill C-27.
Although AIDA isn’t yet law, xAI adopted a proactive compliance strategy to meet transparency and safety standards before launching Grok to Canadian users.

Requirements to Use Grok in Tesla Canada
To use Grok, your Tesla vehicle must have:
-
Premium Connectivity or an active Wi-Fi connection, and
-
The AMD Ryzen processor (compatible with both HW3 and HW4 systems).
Older Teslas equipped with Intel Atom processors are not yet supported, though Tesla’s website notes that Grok “may become available for additional Tesla vehicles through over-the-air (OTA) software updates in the future.”
For many drivers considering used Teslas in Canada, this update highlights the ongoing tech gap between older and newer models — but also suggests that future software upgrades could bring new features to certified used Tesla vehicles available at Carnex.
Tesla’s First Step Toward AI Integration
Grok represents Tesla’s first major integration of xAI’s large-language-model technology into its vehicles. According to Tesla’s release notes, owners can now “talk to Grok,” selecting from different AI personalities such as Storyteller or Unhinged.
The feature can be launched through the App Launcher or by long-pressing the voice command button on the steering wheel.
Currently in early Beta, Grok focuses on natural conversation, humor, and general-knowledge Q&A, rather than controlling car functions.
However, future updates are expected to let Grok handle navigation, entertainment, and system settings, eventually making it smarter and more intuitive than today’s standard voice commands.
Privacy and Transparency
Tesla Canada emphasizes that all Grok conversations are anonymous — they are not linked to any specific driver or vehicle data.
This focus on privacy compliance aligns with Canada’s evolving AI and data protection framework, ensuring Grok meets the country’s stringent standards before expanding further.
What This Means for Tesla and Used Tesla Owners
The launch of Grok in Tesla Canada underscores how fast AI technology is reshaping the EV experience.
For used Tesla owners, this update illustrates how even pre-owned Teslas can stay competitive through continuous over-the-air updates.
