Buying a Used Electric Vehicle: Pros vs Cons

Selling your car has never been easier.

Get on average $500 more than anywhere else.

People shopping for a used vehicle and hoping to find the one that is inexpensive to purchase, easy to maintain, and can be efficient on fuel. In fact, a used electric vehicle will check off all those boxes. Since EVs lose their value faster than gasoline vehicles typically, they are also cheaper to operate than their gas-powered counterparts. A used electric vehicle can be a compelling purchase, but it may not be the best choice for everyone.

If you are thinking of buying a used electric vehicle in 2022,  here are some pros and cons that you should know to see if it’s the right choice for you.

Pros

Used electric vehicles are a bargain

The price tag can be one of the most compelling reasons to buy a used electric vehicle. Depreciation is always the biggest cost factor whether for EVs or traditional cars, and the biggest depreciation hit has been taken by its first owner. That’s especially true for buying used EVs since they tend to lose value more quickly than traditional cars.

Lower cost to operate

Electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and battery EVs have no gasoline engine so no need for oil changes, this applies to whether new or used electric vehicles. Not to mention the most obvious benefit of driving an electric car is the saving on fuel, as electricity is cheaper than gas no matter where you plug in across the country.

A better driving experience with EVs

An electric vehicle does not have an internal combustion engine, the electric engine provides smooth acceleration and deceleration, which make electric vehicles more pleasant to drive. Driving an EV can be smoother and quieter than gasoline vehicles. EV also has a low center of gravity which can improve handling, responsiveness, and ride comfort.

A better option for the environment and your health

Whether new or used, EVs produce less global warming pollution and reduce your carbon footprint. When you purchase a used EV, you are helping the environment even more than if you bought a brand new one. In addition,  gasoline cars burn gasoline and diesel and produce harmful gases that are harmful to our health, while EVs produce much less elimination of harmful tailpipe pollutants.

Cons

Diminished battery performance

Any battery-powered device diminishes its performance over time, and that’s the same thing that can happen to used electric vehicles. For a used EV, the batter age will affect how far you are able to drive. The more a battery degrades, it can hold less charge, your battery range could be affected as a result. A used EV’s battery degrades based on a number of factors. The EV’s battery cooling system is one of the important factors since liquid cooling helps to preserve battery performance.  But not all EVs have the same system; for example, the Nissan Leaf has an air-cooled battery. In addition, some automakers make better batteries than others; for example, Tesla’s batteries can hold up more than 90% of their full capacity after driving 320,000 kilometers, which means the battery degradation is less an issue if you go with a used Tesla.

Outdated technology

If you plan to buy a used electric vehicle and keep it for a couple of years, you may see that its technology will quickie become outdated. While the technology obsolescence also applies to traditional fuel vehicles too, the effects are magnified for used electric vehicles as the technology of EVs is rapidly improving.

Charging infrastructure

Whether you go with a new or used EV, you will absolutely need a charging station for recharge. You may use public chargers but you are limited to your location.  You can plug your EV directly into a wall outlet but it will take significantly longer to recharge. These aren’t the most convenient options or it takes longer to recharge time. While the public chargers aren’t as common as gas stations, you may further invest in a charger at home.

Diminished resale value

As we mentioned, an EV’s depreciation rate is higher than a gasoline vehicle, so don’t expect much value if you plan on selling it. As you were able to buy the used electric vehicle at a cheaper rate, with time, its depreciation will be multiplied.
