2024 Guide To The EV Charger Rebates and Incentives in Canada

Canada, in its commitment to creating a green future, provides appealing federal and provincial incentives to encourage the use of electric vehicles and associated infrastructure. This includes rebates for home EV charger installation.

As the popularity of electric vehicles has grown year after year, so has the number of charging stations across the country. Given that 80% of EV charging happens at home, installing an EV charging station is an essential step toward maximizing the benefits and savings that EVs provide. Whether you are new to the world of electric vehicles or an EV owner looking for installing a home EV charger, read on to find out about the most recent EV charger rebates and incentives in Canada, helping you to make informed decisions and leverage on available opportunities.

2024 Guide To The EV Charger Rebates and Incentives in Canada

Canadian Federal EV Chargers Incentives

The Canadian federal government is leading the way, giving a variety of EV charger rebates and incentives for home and office electric vehicle charging station installations. The Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) is a broad government that aim to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting sustainable energy with making EV charging more accessible for Canadians. This program aims to include public spaces, on-street charging, workplaces, vehicles, multi-family housing, and mass transit.

ZEVIP covers up to 50% of eligible expenses for the purchase and installation of level 2 charging stations in public spaces such as parking lots, offices, and multi-unit residential buildings. However, the project eligibility requires meeting particular criteria such as the number of parking spots, proximity to public transportation, and accessibility for people with disabilities. The rebates amounts vary depending on the type of charging station and its installation location. Eligible costs include site design, project management, EV chargers, installation, licenses/permits, and other direct deployment expenditures.

ZEVIP offers funding based on the stream applicants apply for:

  • Multi-unit residential buildings, workplaces, and light-duty vehicle fleets: Up to 50% of total project expenditures, subject to a maximum of $5,000,000 per project. The minimum funding request is $100,000.
  • Public Places and On-street Parking: Up to 50% of total project expenditures, subject to a maximum of $5,000,000 per project. The minimum funding request is $100,000.

Eligibility criteria differ between the two streams:

  • Multi-unit residential buildings, workplaces, and light-duty vehicle fleets: For-profit Canadian enterprises, electricity/gas utilities, and non-profit organizations such as universities and municipalities.
  • For-profit Canadian enterprises, electricity/gas utilities, and not-for-profit associations (e.g., academic institutions and municipalities) are eligible for on-street parking.

EV Charger Rebates and Incentives

Canadian Provincial EV Charger Rebates

Ontario

The Ontario provincial government recently announced its new Electric Vehicle (EV) ChargeON Program, which will support the construction of publicly accessible charging stations in communities with fewer than 170,000 people, as well as any Indigenous community in Ontario. The amount of funding that is available for each project is determined by the application and the charging technique proposed. If you are a municipality and purchase chargers with a 19kW capacity, you may receive a maximum of $7,500 per charging station, whereas a business could receive up to $5,000 for the same charger.

Additionally, the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP) by the City of Toronto assists in enhancing energy efficiency. Toronto residents can access low-interest loans up to $125,000, covering home energy upgrades, including level 2 EV chargers.

Quebec

Individuals, organizations, businesses, and municipalities can all take advantage of EV charger rebates and incentives offered by the Quebec government. Financial assistance is offered for the purchase and installation of home EV chargers in multifamily residential buildings.

Residents of Quebec might get $600 in lump sum payment for the purchase and installation of a 240-volt home charging infrastructure.

British Columbia

The CleanBC plan, a collaborative effort between the B.C. government, BC Hydro, and FortisBC, offers provincial incentives for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle (EV) home chargers.

The EV charger rebate applies to level 2 and DC fast charging stations, with incentives of up to 50% (up to $350) for single-family homes and a significant subsidy for businesses and organizations that install networked EV chargers for employee use.

Alberta

While the Alberta government presently does not offer special incentives for installing home EV chargers for personal use, the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) sponsors a program to help municipalities accelerate their transition to eMobility.

The Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program encourages the installation of new chargers in various public locations and municipal fleets, paying reimbursements of up to $10,000 for each level 2 charger.

New Brunswick

Residents or organizations that receive a vehicle reimbursement through the Plug-In NB Rebate Program can claim 50% of the cost, before taxes and fees, of purchasing and installing one new level 2 EV charger.  The program covers up to 50% of qualifying expenses for different charger types and up to a maximum of $750.

Saskatchewan

Although Saskatchewan lacks support for EV charger rebates and incentives, the Government of Canada’s new iZEV program offers up to $5,000 in incentives for eligible zero-emission vehicles, which can be applied directly to the purchase or rental cost.

Manitoba

Manitoba Hydro offers a home energy efficiency loan, providing convenient financing for energy-efficient improvements, including EV charger rebates and incentives. The maximum loan amount is $3,000 per EV charger, covering installation costs.

Nova Scotia

While the Nova Scotia government doesn’t offer specific EV charger rebates and incentives for home EV charger installation, the Government of Canada’s Zero-emission Vehicle (ZEV) program can alleviate upfront costs for purchasing an EV.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island currently lacks of EV charger rebates and incentives for domestic charging stations. However, EV registration on the island is free, offering annual savings, and the province reduces vehicle registration expenses by 50%.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Despite the absence of provincial rebates for EV home charging stations, the Government of Canada’s ZEV program can contribute to reducing upfront costs for purchasing an EV.

Yukon

Yukon residents can benefit from reimbursements of up to 50% of the purchase and installation costs, up to a maximum of $750 for a single charger at a personal residence. Additionally, substantial reimbursements of up to $7,500 per installed Level 2 charger are available for multi-family dwellings, commercial structures, institutional structures, and government-owned buildings.

Purchasing a charging station for your electric vehicle is an investment that improves convenience, and accessibility, and contributes to a cleaner future. By taking advantage of current EV charger rebates and incentives, you not only save money but also actively contribute to the development of electric vehicle infrastructure in Canada.

Keep in mind that  EV charger rebates and incentives may change over time, and other options may become available at the municipal or utilities level. Stay informed by checking with your local government or utility provider for the most recent EV charger rebates and incentives in your area.
